Cooking Tips and Methods for the Perfect Salmon

Wild salmon is a rich source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. This delicious, highly nutritious fish that is very easy to prepare. Although there are many ways to cook this fish, salmon is very delicate. To ensure a successful meal, the fish has to be cooked carefully. In today’s post, we are listing down the best ways to prepare and cook salmon:

Searing

Searing is a cooking method wherein the food is exposed to high heat to brown the surface of the food but maintain pinkness in the middle. When it comes to salmon, we recommend using salmon fillets for searing. After searing, you can either slice the fillets for serving or pop it in the oven for further cooking.

To sear the fillets, melt two nubs of unsalted butter in a cast iron pan and keep the heat on high. Carefully place the fillets skin side down, giving enough room for each one to cook. Do not overcrowd the pan or the cooking will not be even. Sear for two minutes or so then flip on the other side.

Roasting

Roasting gives the fish an even cooking. You can roast salmon steaks, fillets, and sides. This cooking method also gives the fish a beautifully browned surface. You can bake the salmon fresh or sear it first before popping in the oven for roasting.

To roast smaller fillets of salmon, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Then, place the fillets skin side down on a lightly oiled sheet pan. Season with salt, pepper, and your choice of seasonings. Pop the fish in the oven and roast for 12 minutes.

Broiling

Broiling enhances the distinct flavors of salmon. It also yields a beautiful burnished top on the fish. To broil the salmon, heat the oven to very hot. Place the oven rack in such a way that the salmon is at least four inches away from the heat source. Now pop in the baking pan and broil the salmon. You have to watch the fish as it cooks to achieve even browning. If you like a slight pinkness in the middle, broil for five minutes. If you want the fish to be done, shut off the broiler and leave it in the hot oven for another three to five minutes.

Grilling

Grilling gives salmon a delightful earthy, smoky flavor. This is the perfect cooking method during the summer season! You can grill salmon steaks, fillets, sides and even whole fish! Start by seasoning the salmon with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Just get a fire going on a charcoal grill and place the seasoned salmon fillets, steak or sides skin down. Leave the fish to grill for about 5 to 6 minutes then flip to the other side. This works great if you like a little pinkness in the middle. Depending on how hot your fire is, cook for another 3 to 10 minutes to achieve your preferred doneness. You want the fish to achieve a slightly charred flesh and skin!
